That's not exactly true.
Take for example multiple build slots, some were against it because they enjoyed having to make sacrifices to play every aspect of the game. Indeed they usually didn't play tanks but nevermind. Point is, you could argue that having multiple builds didn't change anything for them, they just had to not use them. But in reality having multiple builds became a standard and having specialised builds almost mandatory. Just saying, i'd hate to have to respec frequently my AA because raid leaders start deciding the archetype buffs at 5/5 are mandatory or that this golden perk, i dislike, is a must have for this and that encounter.
I'm not fundementaly against it. But it needs to be tedious so it doesn't become common
