Lost My Horse

Ok, I bought Basic Riding and a horse.

I put the horse in a hot key slot and, when I clicked it, the horse icon disappeared. It's not in my inventory, either; it's gone.

What happened? Is this a bug of some sort, or can't horses go in a hot key slot?

Now, I'm out 75 silver and that's a lot in this game. Any ideas on how to get my horse back?

Check companions tab Lol. Think default button is B to get that window.

So, can't I put a horse in a hot key?

You buy a horse, it shows up in your inventory.
You click on the horse in your inventory, the game "consumes" the horse. It is added to your list of Companions.
Look in your list of companions, find the horse, click it there, or drag it to hotbar for easy access.
