Thread: Role playing & writing your own lore

Default Role playing & writing your own lore

Is there anyone that adds their own guild-lore into AoC? I'm very excited about writing some lore about a certain guild. While I'm religious and a converted Muslim, interested in Islamic and Christian mysticism, I guess I have to write guild-lore related to that and try to bypass the fact that some characters might not be accepted by my religion. How serious should I be about it? It's maybe stupid and silly trying. I just find it fun to write things, but English isn't my native language. And, I am still not a Conan lore expert. I got to do some research!

-Roleplayers are either gone or stay in their closed circles in AoC. You're not very likely to find them in forums.
-You may have better luck in rp subforum but even that looks mostly dead.
-Mixing your real religion with fantasy games you're playing is probably a bad idea.
-Hyboria has far too many deities and lovecraftians running around to mesh well with any monotheistic mysticism. Though that can't stop you.

Well in order to work withing the world and lore of Hyboria, none of the world religions today are represented. You would have to use the gods in the game for it to work.

Here is a link so you can see what religions are within the lore.

On a different note, we don't discuss religious beliefs in the forums.

RP is alive, but few RPers use these forums for that purpose, true

I'd be extremely wary of converting RL religions into RP
I have seen some mythos beasts and other aspects succesfully used but actually using live religions sounds to me like a sure way to create conflicts

Lorewise I do not see it fitting in in AoC either

Default Lore created in Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2

Lore written in a Guild Wars context

I'm proud to present examples of player written lore bound to the Guild Wars story. Maybe an annoying off-topic, but I had to do it...

Wasn't there a thread back in the day with tons of written conan stories?

There are a lot of german guilds who wrote there own lore for the guild, or gave the guild a very deep backround, even if they are not hardcore in RP (e.g. why they are mercenaries / only invite female toons, even why and how they act only in the name of Set).

But most found out after a while, that it contradicts with the goals of guilds, if you limit youself too much by lorewise invitations. You will play with people, who don't care about the guilds lore, if it's fun for you to play with them.

Taking real religions as more as a slight inspiration will be a bad idea. First it just will not fit in the conan lore, and whats the point in establishing a lore for a guild in a surrounding where it will never fit in, and second is this game crowded with very different people, who come to the world of Hyboria to NOT have to deal with or talk about rl stuff. But to take a religion thats already in the conan lore and build your guild around that seems fun to many, many guilds did this.

Wondering why you think because you have deep feelings for your religion that means you have to write your lore about a guild in a game with lots of religion in it anyway.

I wouldn't discuss real world religion on these forums. I think it is against forum rules.

Here to get you started on lore research:-->
    REH original stories:
    http://aoc.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Stories
    Gods:
    http://aoc.wikia.com/wiki/gods

Sardanapal wrote a couple of good stories that drew on religious themes. Read them in the Roleplaying subforum.

I would not use real life religions, but would suggest that you rather use some of the Hyborian religions, and their beliefs, to lift out some of the points you want to make in your writings.

Ishtar the ivory-hipped goddess of war and love and Hannuman the ape god are worshipped in Shem and Zamora worships Bel and Asura is worshipped in Vhendya. Some Picts worship Jhebbal Sag who is an ancient nature god. Aquilonians worship Mitra (more information on this from http://aoc.wikia.com/wiki/Black_Colossus_%28REH%29 ), Crom is worshipped in Cimmeria, Set in Stygia and there are many more religions spread throughout the regions. From Gunderland to Afghulistan and then many, many more gods in Khitai.

My favourite find on these pages and which informed some of my own writing: http://aoc.wikia.com/wiki/Asura

Remember: there is not a one-to-one ratio of religions in Hyboria to real life religions, so I would gather information on the different ones, especially those from REH’s writings and then use the different gods to tell different stories or ideas.
I like sticking to the savagery of REH’s original vision, including the barbaric and semi-barbaric religions and worship, as well as the inherent notion of sacrifice, but you can use the very different religions in AoC lore as basis for some of your stories.
