okay, but why does the combos say

2(mid) 1(mid) etc? what is the number for? i thought that is how many times you have to press the direction button?

The ingame manual might be pretty dated but I'm quite sure it explains basics adequately.

Also you should not be allergic to sticked forum threads. Especially in a game's newcomers' section.

Combos will have a starter then 1-3 follow up arrow keys, the last of the arrows being the finisher. If you do a complete combo, the finisher will add bonus damage and do an animation sequence.

Starting the combo is hitting whatever key you've placed the combo on (keys 4-0 and any other keys you may have keybound a combo to). Then you hit the arrow keys (1-3 and after level 40, Q and E) to go through the combo sequence.

The combo hover info that shows UL(1), Mid(2) and UR(3) refers to the direction of the follow up attack and the default arrow key number to hit.

You do need to be careful about how fast you hit your follow up keys as the game saves just two keystrokes for action, the one the game is doing and the next one you want the game to do. If you have a combo that goes 4-1-3-2, you can't hit all four keystrokes too fast or the game will start the combo by doing the combo set to key 4, then would skip the middle two keys (1 and 3) and act on key 2. By going so fast, basically the game is assuming you've decided to change which key you want it to do next. But the effect is you've messed up your combo and won't get the bonus damage from the finisher. So, yes, until you've learned how fast you can hit the keys without messing the combo up, it may be wise to wait for the animation of each attack to complete.

Actually you can go faster than waiting for each attack animation, but it may be wise to take your time until you've learned how fast.
