You need to be in presence of a worldboss or doing an instance/raid or you won't get any reaction from the overlays. Say you are peacefully doing quests in a levelling zone you won't see any messages...

There was some bugs with the automatic updating some time back. Download newest version from his site and I'll bet it works for you too.

Got that latest update, and thought to inform that Trend Micro marked the file as unsecure and autodeleted it. Had to disable the protection to install the new version.

Any progress on a premium version, or is it discontinued?
